The problem this blog exists to address is a newer game on the same board. Security research has evolved a performance in which the PoC's disclaimer lies about what the PoC is doing, and the defender ends up with a shallower picture than the attacker already has. This blog reads what has been published, describes what is actually there, and names what was quietly withheld.
The problem has a second dimension that runs quieter. For a meaningful class of enterprise products, edge appliances, managed file transfer, identity brokers, kernel drivers, the CVE stream is a lagging indicator. Attackers find the bug first and use it for weeks before the vendor issues an advisory. Incident response firms eventually recognize the pattern. Defenders learn about it through the advisory, which is to say, last. See disclosure-after-exploitation for the full shape. Pattern recognition arrives earlier than CVEs for products built this way, which is why this site leans on patterns as much as it leans on posts.
the line
A vulnerability is "in the wild" once a CVE is assigned or a proof-of-concept is public. Either satisfies the condition. Once either exists, the weapon is on the attacker's side of the line. The only question left is whether defenders are given the full picture of what they are now defending against.
"Already public" is not the same as "already surfaced." A PoC posted ten minutes ago on a quiet gist is public in form and not in effect. This blog does not write on PoCs at the moment they land. It writes on them once they have been indexed, referenced, or absorbed into the public knowledge graph. By the time a post goes up, attackers tracking the space have had the weapon for days or weeks. Defenders frequently do not know the weapon exists.
what we do not do
We do not write about undisclosed bugs. We do not publish attacks against vendors who have not had a chance to patch. If something novel gets discovered in the course of research here, it goes through vendor channels on the private timeline coordinated disclosure expects. That workflow is real and it is fine. This blog is a different workflow.
We are not researchers in the sense of "people who find and report new bugs." We are readers, in the sense of "people who read what researchers publish and describe what it actually does."
the move we reject
The security research economy has evolved a particular performance. A researcher publishes a proof-of-concept with a disclaimer that it is "for authorized testing only." The PoC prints that disclaimer before it parses its own arguments. The README explains that the exploit has been "intentionally defanged" and that the weaponized version is being withheld for responsibility reasons. The code in the repository, read mechanically, is doing the thing the README says it is not doing.
When a PoC ships with a disclaimer that the thing it is doing is something else, the omission is not a defensive choice. It is an operational one. The researcher withheld the weaponized packaging to preserve an advantage, not to protect users. The first is an ethical posture. The second is the hoarding of advantage. They should not be confused.
The researcher's advantage is preserved over anyone who might try to reproduce the work independently. The user's safety is not, because users are defended only by understanding the mechanism the weapon operates against. A writeup that inherits the omission without naming it is laundering the choice. The reader finishes with the impression that the attack is bounded in ways it is not. The researcher's curation of public versus private becomes the operational reality the defender plans around. That is a lie told in the defender's direction, by people who have told themselves they are acting responsibly.
This blog names the move when it shows up. The code is already public. The mechanism is already knowable. Reading it carefully and describing what is actually there is not a harm. It is the only way to undo the stagecraft.
what defenders need
Detection engineers need the full behavioral chain, not the sanitized version. Incident response teams need the exact artifacts, command lines, filesystem writes, and network patterns, not the approximations that appear in vendor advisories. Threat intelligence functions need to understand the pre-conditions, the targeting logic, and the parts of the attack that were selected versus improvised.
Attackers already have all of this. They have the weaponized version, either because they built it from the same public primitives or because they bought it. Withholding mechanism analysis from public writeups preserves the attacker's advantage and nothing else.
when we get it wrong
Expect the loudest objections to this framing from the quarter where the disclaimer-wrapped performance is itself the professional output. Hear them. Then ask them to walk through, mechanically, which specific paragraph of which post published something not already derivable from public material. That has been the criterion since the beginning. It remains the criterion.
If a post here crosses the line the blog says it holds, point at the code. The posts are mechanical; the criticism can be mechanical too. Show the specific claim, the specific inference, the specific paragraph. If the argument holds, the post gets corrected. If the argument is "this feels like too much detail," it does not hold.
